September 30th Prayer: What is prayer?
Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God – Mother Theresa.
As we focus on God, we connect with Him and grow in our intimacy with our creator. Many times we pray when things are hard or when we have a problem, but if we can cultivate a daily prayer life, we will find that communicating with God will become easier. The habit of reaching out to God in prayer in the morning will be a joy rather than an obligation.
The practice of prayer is not so that we can check it off of our “to-do list” but rather to help us receive the guidance that we need so that our days will go well. Asking the Lord, who knows the future, “What do you see for us today?” It will help us to avoid many pitfalls and unnecessary problems. We will become solutions-based, and our hope will rise because we know that we have the Lord directing what should happen next. We are not alone experiencing life.
Your life is a relationship with God. It is time to rethink prayer. Who are we praying to? What are we saying and why are we saying it? We want our communication with God to be accessible and natural. There are different ways in which we communicate with our loved ones. Our relationship with God is no different in that we want to pray with all kinds of prayer. With God, we can speak to Him with short sentences for help or guidance like, “Help me, Lord!” It may be a prayer based on scripture. It can be brief or lengthy. You can pray for yourself or intercede for others. Having an ongoing conversation that carries on the last conversation. Treating prayer like a relationship is best. Our prayers will continue throughout the day and in all areas of our lives.
